The Towns
Twain Harte
twainhartecc.com
The town of Twain Harte was named for authors Mark Twain and Bret Harte who both lived here at one time. The town tends to shut down in the evening but there are a few nice places to eat and a sports bar. The Rock occasionally has live music on Fridays. The hardware and grocery stores are after all the local hotspots. You may get sushi made daily at the full sized Twain Harte Market or fresh caught fish delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as table top beef and a good beverage selection.

Hiking and Fishing
We recommend Best Short Hikes in California, Northern Sierra by Karen and Terry Whitehill and available at Amazon.com. There is a copy for your perusal at the house. The National Forest Service at Mi-wuk has maps that you can purchase for surrounding areas.

For Everyone:
Dining
Regarding dining in Tuolumne county, the owners of some give up the area as the excellent French Bakery in Sonora said when we asked him about the local bread, "
Sonora, Sonora, and when I came from France I thought Sonoma." There are a few other gems in our area. Notably the 5-star Seven
Sisters Restaurant at the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne. In Twain Harte we would
recommend The Rock – casual but good: Sportsman for
home made sausages and breakfast
Winetasting
Our personal favorite is Stevenot stevenotwinery.com outside the town of Murphys about one hour away. There you will find some truly gourmet restaurants and top name music events at Ironstone Vineyards ironstonevineyards.com as well as a chance to view the world’s Largest Gold Nugget.

Festivals and Music
There are always art and visual events going on in the area at the Sonora Fairgrounds or at Eproson Park in Twain Harte. Some of our favorites include the Blues Festival fireonthemountain.com, the Scottish Highland Festival, and the Sonora Celtic Faire. Annually an oxen driven covered wagon team comes over Sonora Pass. If a ho-down with beans, steak and cowboys is your thing, then this is a must do event.
